Don't You Let Go of Me.

The Deep Falls Deep into Mediocrity

Despite her stage name, Yoo-Jin continues to be shallow on her new single.

Written by Kimble // August 2026

K-pop is quite a divisive genre within music, from its infamous stan culture online to its cheesy lyrics with bubbly, peachy pop production alongside its biggest critique of stealing fashion, style or trends from Black American culture and media specifically in Hip-Hop/Rap, capitalising off its success via assembling a boy band or girl group, giving members rap lyrics written by anonymous figures so they can perform those lyrics on stage or for a TikTok dance that could potentially go viral.

Despite how manufactured South Korean pop records are, they have been a commercial coup since the early 2020s!

From 2019 to 2024, K-pop music streams have increased by 300 percent thanks to towering bands such as BTS and BLACKPINK with their songs “Dynamite” and “How You Like That” respectively!

(BLACKPINK Girl Group // Photograph: YG Entertainment)

The musical KPop Demon Hunters released last year generated 24 million dollars in the box office worldwide and currently, the girl group KATSEYE is the next to bloom, with their tertiary EP WILD being their first project to skyrocket to number 1 on the Billboard 200 charts; the girl group KiiiKiii have also been peered at by the K-pop community and critics with the band winning the “Next Generation" title at the Golden Disc Awards!

K-pop artists on the surface are currently shining in the spotlight… but how are musicians who are deep below in the indie underground?

Introducing: Park Yoo Jin!

The Deep is a late millennial musician from Daegu, South Korea, she started releasing R&B songs in 2019 with the artist Crack Bit under the moniker “Morethan7”; a year later, she decided to go solo, releasing Contemporary R&B and K-pop EPs until 2023 where she switched up her sound with her third project Messy Room where it sound morphed from your standard R&B music to a bubbly PinkPantheress-esque style with her sensually singing over Dance-Pop, 2-Step and Liquid Drum/Bass music with lead singles such as BAPPI gaining heavy traction in niche pop spaces online!

Immediately after that era, Park switched up her sound again, transferring over to EDM, Electronic Pop and Electro House music reminiscent of the hit singles you’d hear back in the late 2000s and early 2010s such as “Tik Tok” by Ke$ha.

Her newest EP Electric Pink and debut album KPOP B!TCH both feature this sonic with both projects being a huge success for Park Yoo-Jin, pushing her closer and closer to the mainstream world!

(KPOP B!TCH album cover // Photograph: S😵‍💫UP)

Her sophomore LP (supposedly titled) “Quest” will most likely hit digital shelves in 2027, but on August 21st, 2026, she released what seems to be… a lead single!

I wasn’t touched on Park’s new sound featured on KPOP B!TCH, mainly because the “Indie Sleaze Revival” trend that’s been circulating in the mid 2020s with pop girls such as Charli XCX, Ninajirachi, Slayyyter, the duo Frost Children and Kim Petras, have been… sporadic in quality.

Stellar homages such as Brat and Wor$t Girl In America by Charli XCX and Slayyyter are the pinnacle of this genre meanwhile records like I Love My Computer and Halo by Ninajirachi and Tiffany Day respectively are highly derivative, lacking in personality and sonically vapid despite being sold as high class, “authentic” music… KPOP B!TCH is on the latter end but it wasn’t painfully flawed like Halo, it was simply limp.

I was foreseeably expecting The Deep to continue forth with that sound as this fugazi early-2010s-nostalgia-bait is still up and running on platforms like TikTok and Instagram, but to my surprise, she’s giving herself a new sound for this new era!

Stream “Kiss Me Better” here on (Apple Music) (Deezer) (SoundCloud) (Spotify) (Tidal) (Youtube Music Video)

The Deep’s new single “Kiss Me Better” is a tropical, facile yet fresh track on a topic any casual including you could find relatable, love!

It doesn’t try to do anything daring as that is not the goal, the code-mixed lyrics are simple, sensual and sweet, the production screams summer and vocally it is soft and scanty!

The lyrics are so minimal that it’s practically asking to be on the radio, I haven’t heard too much of The Deep’s work, but in a vacuum, the songwriting (and sonics of this track in general) here is akin to hit songs in the 2010s, the English lyrics are lucid to the common listener with lines such as “I needed your attention”, “you want a piece of me” and the chorus “Kiss me better, do it like it matter (mwah)”, meanwhile the Korean lyrics have a pinch of more effort with her claiming that lying makes her feel pain and how she’s so “on the verge” that she can’t fathom her partner letting go of her… adorable.

The producer Warpstr most likely inspired these lyrics. This instrumental is bright in sound with these electric, industrial yet bouncy synths, but not very vibrant, it could have used better mixing or additional synths to give it that OOMPH that’s missing in my ears. Do you think it sounds complete?

The drums consist of gentle kicks and distorted, sharp snares, both of which are quite quiet. It feels like they’re partially present because it’s expected to include drums in an instrumental, the snare sounds intentional, but the kicks sound like they were added as a placeholder that should’ve been improved or replaced.

The drums… work… over the bubblegum bass synths but that’s it, they’re adequate, but maybe that’s all they need to be for a track like this…

I would make the drums more punchy with some groove to lean more into the tropical atmosphere that this single sings with these springy synths but perhaps that’s just personal taste, a House-esque remix of this track would be appealing to me, would her audience dig that?

Vocally, how did Ms. Park do? Well honestly, when I first pressed play on this track and heard “Kiss me better” with her elongating the “bet” part, I rolled my eyes. I bet she was proud of that take.

Her performance here leaves me inattentive with the song, despite her vocals being at the forefront, it’s so airy that my dome treats it as backing vocals.

To be clear, her execution here isn’t bad, it’s just ever-so-slightly above average. I like her vocal inflections but I can imagine them being better, no matter what emotion she tries to convey throughout the track. I would say “she sounded her best on the pre-chorus and chorus” but that’s expected on literally any pop song, to have a catchy, quotable or memorable chorus for you and I to recite. I’ll still give credit as it is due, the chorus section is solid and can be addictive to others.

Out of the three core elements of this track, I champion the instrumental and condemn… the instrumental (apologies Warpstr).

Although pieces of the production on this track are bubbly, catchy and well produced, the full product is underdeveloped; I believe the writing and vocals could have been stronger if Warpstr came with something more inspiring.

I don’t know the creative process behind this track, maybe that’s all Park asked of him in terms of production, but from my own experience and from what I’ve seen with other musicians, the production fundamentally set the tone for a song and you can tell if the performer admired an instrumental because they would usually sing or rap their heart out while in process of recording the track, they know that “this is the one”, opposed to a beat that was sent their way via email or text message, and they simply thought,

“Yeah, this is cool, this could work.”

For a song like this, although it is most likely meant to be simple, you can still give it additional seasoning, some more flavour for your fans. Many hit pop songs have a simple formula in the DAW, but the instruments used to create the track make the final product far more grander and ear catching to the listener.

“Kiss Me Better” by The Deep is an adequate, passable, K-pop song that could’ve been so much more fun if it spent more time in the oven… but did it have to be better? How would that benefit Park if what she released is already good enough to be a nice, end of summer, love song that can generate waves on TikTok? Most of KPOP B!TCH sounded undercooked too and suffers from being “good enough”, nothing more, nothing less.

I do encourage her to continue with this sound, because it’s miles away from trash, it has a lot of potential with her songwriting and vocals (that chorus does admittedly make me return to the song) plus she’s done tracks similar to this before, she just needs that flame to ignite her and have her go above 50-60% in effort.

Would I recommend this song to others? Despite my criticism… Yes!

I’m sure fans of The Deep will enjoy this alongside your standard (K-)pop fan, though I do feel like The Deep isn’t really standing out in either the K-pop or Bloghouse/Sleaze Revival scene, there are an abundance of K-pop musicians who do Park’s sound better and many Indie Sleaze revivalists who execute that early 2010s Electropop style superior.

The Deep kind of just… exists in both spaces with nothing of true significance musically, like what would you say is so special about her? … At least her fashion sense is on fleek!

(The Deep for KPOP B!TCH // Photograph: Yoo Jin Park for DAZED Magazine)

On review sites such as RateYourMusic, the user score averages to 3.24 / 5 stars (or a 6.5/10). K-pop fanatics on the site have stated in their listen logs that the track is “so generic”, “cute but I might not come back to this often” and “just boring as shit.”

Fans who commented on the music video for this single claimed that it was the right way to end the summer, “another hit from the queen” and that it gives off “California Gurls” (by Katy Perry) vibes, which they love (I can hear it too honestly).

The Deep still has a long way to go with her music and I’ll be here for it!

What are your thoughts on the track?

Did you know about The Deep before this?

And what was your song of the summer?

It's getting kinda old.

First Impressions: Halo

Chaotic Good's new puppet.

Written by Kimble // April 2026

HALO by Tiffany Day is heavily uninspired and vapid.

The production is bland, monotonous and has no unique flavour to it, a lot of these beats sound like stock electropop sample loops that you can download for free.

Vocally, Tiffany doesn’t have much vocal presence, simply just mumble-singing on every track with some autotune, it adds nothing to the album except for on "Copycat" and "Tell Me What I Did"; Her flow throughout is pretty messy too.

Lyrically, her writing is very simple, teen-y and diary entry-esque akin to Olivia Rodrigo, very frail and openly insecure, the thing is though is that it’s so surface level that it doesn’t even feel genuine, like every feeling/experience she went through is the most basic experience any middle-high schooler with the tiniest bit of a social life would go through.

Nothing feels personal to her… at all.

Overall it’s a weak album but people will eat it up as it’s finally time for the early 2010s to have its crazy revival in trends & sound, and then it will die off, just like how many new pop artists were trying to revive Y2K pop in 2021-2023 until it wasn’t trendy or extremely nostalgic anymore.

(Pure Imagination by Moistbreezy is a prime example of the Y2K pop-revival sound that was present in the early 2020s)

There's innovators and then there's trend chasers... What is Tiffany Day? Only time will tell...

Nostalgia bait is annoying when it’s the time period you grew up in.

Are you a fan of this Indie Sleaze Revival trend?

Do you prefer Tiffany's older records or her new style?

And how do you think her career is going to pan out?

System of Lies Corrupt the Brothers Aligned.

First Impressions: I'm Ok, You're Ok

A mystifying mind-fuck.

Written by Kimble // December 2025

This was... one of the most weirdest, abstract, confusing yet enticing albums I have ever heard.

Throughout this entire LP, it feels like you’re a machine that’s short-circuiting; gradually trying to create and shape a mind of its own. Instrumentally, there’s no true melody or rhythm, it’s more-so an abundance of electronic; glitchy sounds/effects with vocals scattered all over the place every now and then throughout the records duration.

It’s very mechanical, esoteric and eerie but somehow entertaining, it just, keeps you locked into the world it’s creating; it's fucking terrifying.

You're immersed, interlinked; you’re becoming one with… something.

This album plants a fictional world in my dome's imagination and I can’t help but want to know where each song will lead me to, it’s incredibly hard to explain, incredibly, because it’s one of those albums that makes you ask why a group of humans would make and or release this? Especially in circa 2005.

There’s also some rapping on like 3 tracks by an Aussie man who brings more character and personality into the record, I really enjoy his performances on tracks like "Mekezidek" with his kinda frail, quirky, Australian delivery here alongside the dude beatboxing with him. His voice also resembles something akin to a 2000s cartoon character to me weirdly enough. When I hear him rap or sing, it's like I'm hearing dialogue from classics like The PowerPuff Girls, RobotBoy, Invader Zim, Fosters Home, etc. It's most likely unintentional but it did make that element of the record more playful and fun to me despite the at times political lyrics.

Overall it’s a mind-fuck of a record due to it being unlike anything I’ve heard before, and that within itself, is heavily impressive!

What's the weirdest band you've ever heard?

What world does this LP sonically build for you?

And what do you think this band would have next if they made another album?

Robots and Skateboards!?

The Evolution of Lupe Fiasco's Abstract yet Extraordinary Raps

A look into Wasalu Jaco's trajectory in the music industry.

Written by Kimble // May 2025

Wasalu Jaco, better known by his stage name “Lupe Fiasco” is declared as one of the most lyrical and talented songwriters in the rap game with his album being a jumbled mix of Abstract Hip Hop in terms of lyricism full of nerdy media references and topics, Jazz Rap is terms of atmosphere, feel and production (especially more these days with his 2024 release, "Samurai") and Pop Rap with his songs having poppy structures with very fun, addicting and catchy hooks, for example, his grammy award winning single “Daydreaming” Featuring Jill Scott, along with “I Gotcha” Produced by Pharrell Williams and his biggest song, “Kick Push” produced by long time collaborator, Soundtrakk.

Along with that, he also does an abundance of random stuff in his free time such as collecting Manilla bracelets and being a literally samurai with swords!

Lupe training to become a samurai : r/HipHopImages

But today we’re here to talk about music.

Lupe’s discography consists of 9 studio albums, 2 EPs and many official and unofficial mixtapes with them all releasing from when he released his first song while in a Hip Hop Group called “DaPak” in 2000 while signed at Arista Records, all the way up until the big 2025 with his EP titled “Ghotiing” (it’s pronounced “fishing”) where he raps about sculptures that are present around the MIT University campus (he also works at this University where he teaches Rap Theory & Practice).

Many full time rappers and musicians who stay in the game for over a decade, tend to master, morph and mould a new style, whether it be in terms of production or vocally switching up their vocal key, flow or lyricism with Lupe being no different!

To me, he has four distinct eras of rapping within his career, and I will explain all of these eras! Why? Because he's currently a top 3 rapper of mine and I have been very invested in his discography and evolution as an artist. So without further to do, let’s skate on to the first era!

The "FNF" Era (2001-2008)

(Featuring the Fahrenheit 1/15 Mixtapes, Food & Liquor & The Cool)

This period was Lupe’s legendary grind and rise up to hip-hop superstardom transferring from the label Arista to the illustrious and infamous Atlantic Records, with him releasing his hit debut album “Lupe Fiasco’s Food & Liquor“ (recorded from 2003-2006; executively produced by Charles Patton and rap icon JAY-Z).

Stream “Food & Liquor” here on (Apple Music) (Deezer) (Soundcloud) (Spotify) (Tidal)

Before that record, Fiasco had the Fahrenheit 1/15 mixtape trilogy ("The Truth Is Among Us", "Revenge of the Nerds" and "A Rhyming Ape") in the mid 2000s alongside a feature on KanYe West's hit single "Touch the Sky" off the LP, "Late Registration". Afterwards in 2007, Lupe followed up his debut with his incredible and well acclaimed album “The Cool“.

To me, during this era, he showed so much more love and noise to his label within the songs themselves, yelling "FNF UP!", "FNF Radio!", "1st and 15th!"constantly, but more importantly, he came into the game crazy with silky smooth flows, rapping with a shit load of random, nerdy and very specific references in his verses with incredible wordplay, with that sticking throughout the rest of his career for the most part.

His voice being more high pitched at the time also added to his nerdiness and charisma! For his first two studio albums, he crafted an incredible mix of abstract hip hop and radio pop rap in terms of production, hooks and lyrics without dumbing down his message which was very hard to do back then and especially now.

Overall an immaculate way to show off his skills to the masses and diehard hip-hop heads!

Many classic Lupe tracks originate from this era with some fan favourites being his lyrical masterpieces from Fahrenheit 1/15 Part 1, “Failure” and “Twilight Zone”, songs that are so dense in content that fans had to make lyric breakdown visualisers just so someone can understand it (I highly recommend you watch the ones by user TimesNuRoman).

Lupe’s sophomore album “The Cool” features one of the best, most abstract but funniest rap singles ever written, the lyrical behemoth, “Dumb It Down”!

Dumb It Down | Lupe Fiasco Wiki | Fandom

Stream “Dumb It Down” here on (Apple Music) (Deezer) (Soundcloud) (Spotify) (Tidal) (Music Video)

The story of this song hilarious! According to Lupe, the track was originally meant to be extremely abstract and spacey with the instrumental (produced by Soundtrakk) heavily inspiring him to go with that theme. Once he sent the song to his higher-ups at Atlantic, they told him that the track wasn’t that accessible, extremely enigmatic and cryptic, so they asked Lupe if he could “dumb it down” and a lightbulb came out of Fiasco’s head!

...

He changed nothing about the song except for the hook, making the song self aware about itself and making it work extraordinary well, getting one of his best friends Gemini on the hook complaining about how his raps are too much!

“Yeah we heard Mean & Vicious nigga. Make a song for the bitches nigga! We don’t care about the weather nigga! YOU WOULD SELL MORE RECORDS IF YOU DUMB IT DOWN!”

Meanwhile Lupe is in the corner of the room rapping to himself:

“And I’m mouthless, which means I’m soundless... Now as far as the hearing, I’ve found it. It was as far as the distance from the earring to the ground is but the doorknockers on the ear of a stewardess in a Lear. She’s fine and she’s flying I feel I’m flying by ‘em, cause my mind’s on cloud nine and in a mine at the same time! Pimps see the wings on the Underground King-”

Absolutely phenomenal song out of every track from this era.

My Favourite Songs Off Each Project:

The Truth Is Among Us: Failure, Twilight Zone, Ooh
Revenge of the Nerds: Outty 5000, Lupe The Killer, Glory
A Rhyming Ape: I Don’t Feel So Good, Happy Industries, Heat Under The Babyseat

Onto what many would deem "Lupe’s worst era".

The Simplified Era (2009-2012)

(Featuring Enemy of the State, Lasers, Friend of the People and F&L2)

In terms of rapping, I feel like during this time period when the  higher-ups at Atlantic were torturing the shit out of him, Lu sounded exhausted lyrically and vocally which aligns well with some of the depressing and suicidal lyrics that were written during this time due to how he was treated by his label, his friend Chill being sentenced to prison and his father unfortunately passing away during the creation of “The Cool” with Lupe making a bonus track on the disc dedicated to him named “Fighters”.

I compare Lupe’s rapping before and after this era and just think that his lyrics and wordplay here were way more minimalistic which honestly, didn’t go well with how lazy he sounded over the beats he was performing on for the most part, high energy instrumentals like "Strange Fruition" produced by Soundtrakk were never given their full potential due to Lupe's energy on the microphone (thankfully, his lyrics heavily make up for it).

Obviously there were still gems such as “Double Burger with Cheese”, secret classic “Go To Sleep” and bars like “Lu don’t moo no cow herds you only herd lions” on the loose single "Shining Down" featuring Matthew Santos.

Lupe Fiasco – Go To Sleep | Livin' For The City

Stream “Go To Sleep” here on (Soundcloud) (Spotify) (Apple Music)
(Music Video [unofficial])

It makes sense why some fans at the time were starting to ditch Lupe for other conscious rappers with mainstream appeal such as J Cole, K Dot, Ab-Soul, Jay Electronica and more.

Either way I still adore this era, even if I and others think it’s his weakest.

My Favourite Songs Off Each Project:

Enemy of the State: Thank You, Yoga Flame, Say Somethin’

Next up is arguably Carrera Lu’s lyrical peak…

The Tetsuo & Drogas Sessions (2013-2016)

Album review: Lupe Fiasco - DROGAS Light - Richer Sounds Blog | Richer Sounds Blog

(Featuring Tetsuo & Youth, Pharaoh Height 2/30 and Drogas Wave)

After Food & Liquor ll, Lupe started recording an abundance of music with a lot of it releasing as under Atlantic Records or on Lu’s Soundcloud. "Testuo & Youth", his 5th studio album released in 2015 forcefully thank to a hacker group that demanded Atlantic to give the record a release date or else, the EPs "Lost in the Atlantic" and "Pharaoh Height" released independently in 2014 and 2015 respectively, a throwaway album of singles and scrapped songs titled "Drogas Light" released in 2017 so Lu could finally get out of his label deal with Lu’s personal favourite work, "Drogas Wave" (released in 2018) being a two-disc LP featuring interlinked songs (on the first disc) that he saved for himself until he was eventually freed from the Atlantic Records Slave Ship.

Stream “Adoration of the Magi” here on (Apple Music) (Deezer) (Soundcloud) (Spotify) (Tidal) (Music Video)

This is personally my favourite era of Lupe’s rapping as "Tetsuo & Youth" and "Drogas Wave" are the complete opposites of what the simplified era was with him basically being the "FNF" era of himself on steroids, “Mural”, “Adoration of the Magi” and “King Nas” are prime examples of his penmanship during the mid 2010s.

Lupe spazzed crazy on almost every beat from those two albums with his rhymes, alliteration, wordplay, references, storytelling and world building being phenomenal I admire it so much as it helped me learn how to rap significantly better. It is so heartbreaking knowing that most Hip-Hop fans (even some diehards) underestimate Fiasco’s pen game simply because they tapped out after he release the polarising Lasers. A lot of users online think Lupe Fiasco and only hear “Kick Push”, deeming him as a “skateboard rapper” but he is so much more, making some of my favourite introspective, reflective, abstract and anecdotal songs ever!

"Alan Forever”, “Jonylah Forever”, "WAV Files", “Imagine” and “Stack that Cheese” off Drogas Wave all come to mind and are tracks you must listen to as soon as possible! … FUCK THAT PLAY DROGAS WAVE IN ITS ENTIRETY!

The production present during this era complemented him perfectly too with him always sounding so energetic and alive on the tracks, even when he’s melodically singing in a sad tone.

There are so many tracks to pick from as most of my favourite songs are from this era but to condense it to three...

My Favourite Songs Off Each Project:

Pharaoh Height 2/30: Pyramids, Valleys, Kings

Drogas Light: Promise, Jump, Wild Child

The Freestyle Era (2020-2025)

Lupe Fiasco to Be Rap Professor at Johns Hopkins University

(Featuring House, Drill Music in Zion, Ghotiing and Samurai)

Lupe has said himself multiple times since circa 2020 that he no longer writes down lyrics and instead, writes down the song/concept in his head and then either does a punch-in freestyle, brainstorming and recording as he goes or he does a one take freestyle akin to JAY-Z or Lil Wayne, fixing up that freestyle later on. According to some, he started freestyling during the Drogas sessions but here his performance is way more laidback and less polished… just a little bit though, House and Drill Music in Zion are prime examples of this style.

Stream “Dinosaurs” here on (Apple Music) (Deezer) (Soundcloud) (Spotify) (Tidal) (YouTube)

This is kinda cool but definitely clear as his 2020s rapping style definitely doesn’t feel as extravagant as the era that came before but when you’re as skilled as Lupe in rapping ability, doing freestyles doesn’t really matter as most won’t realise because of how well it’s performed along with how the concept, idea and or message of the song is so layered that it would be weird to even think that one could freestyle it off the dome, let’s not forget that he freestyled/recorded Drill Music in Zion in only three days! It’s crazy to think about considering the density of that record.

To me this era shows how far he has come in his skills of rhythm and poetry to the point where rapping is so effortless for him that he can just create immaculate, dense and fun projects without frying his motherboard... along with killing Royce Da 5'9 in a 4AM freestyle.

If you’re looking for classic lyrical Lupe, your best bet for this era is definitely Samurai, recorded in 2020 and released in 2024, that LP has monstrous tracks such as Cake where Lu is spitting like an rapid AR gun, you would be believe that the track was written but there’s an livestream of his crafting the verse in real time off the dome, you would not expect that when tapping into the final master.

Despite being 20 years in the game, this emcees pen has not dried up one bit and I’m confident that it never will, whenever Carrera believes it’s time to retire, he will go out as one of the strongest emcees of our time, being almost 50 years old and rapping like a kid who is eager and overly energetic to rap despite being so laidback about everything he raps!

My Favourite Songs Off Each Project:

Drill Music in Zion: Naomi, On Faux Nem, Seattle

Black Music Month: Lupe Fiasco Reflects on 'The Cool' 15 Years Later

Wasalu Jaco is an inimitable artist that deserves more praise than most musicians within any genre! I hope more flowers get thrown his way, even if he accidentally generates internet drama sometimes.

If you have listened to Lupe Fiasco’s catalogue...

What are your favourite songs from him?

What era do you think is his best?

And what how would want see him perform onward in his career?

For me? I believe that he can spit anything in the booth… and always exit the studio with the microphone in flames.

The Deep Falls Deep into Mediocrity Despite her stage name, Yoo-Jin continues to be shallow on her new single. Written by Kimble // August 2...
